California: Culture And Leisure

Image
High- and low-brow art enjoy comparable support here. For most people, the state's contributions to culture are the many blockbusters made by Hollywood movie studios or televised sitcoms shot on LA sound stages. This is art in unashamed pursuit of the almighty dollar, complete with tabloid scandals and giant movie billboards blotting out the Los Angeles sun. But another creativity reveals itself through the state's history of landscape painting, portraiture, and 20th-century avant-garde art. Modern artists John McLaughlin and Elmer Bischoff , and ceramists Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson have all made international reputations. So have a few pioneers of photographic art, such as Imogen Cunningham and Ansel Adams. British artist David Hockney lived here for many years, capturing the state's sun-soaked image on canvas. California is also home to some of the world's finest art museums, including LACMA, the Oakland Museum, the San Francisco MOMA, and the two J Paul Getty...

Romance in Rome

Image
Whether you're looking for love in a plate of spaghetti, a glass of red wine or the enchanting views of the Eternal City, here's a hand-picked selection of places which would make any heart flutter. 1. Passion. Inspired by Stendhal's novel, 16 Rosso is the place for romance near Piazza Vescovio. It's small but perfectly proportioned with its scarlet walls embracing you as you enter. Luxury lies in the details: black floors and napkins contrasted by china white plates, and all surrounded by design objects. Some say it reminds them of New York, others say French bistro. Perhaps it's the artwork of Avedon, Bert Stern, Mappletorpe or Man Ray lining the walls which evoke such feelings, or perhaps the soft jazz permeating through the restaurant. Via Stimigliano 16, ROMA Telephone 0686211816 2. Seduction. The sumptuos Hotel Relais Castello Della Castelluccia is offering lovers an exclusive package for €265.00 per person which offers: 2 nights in a deluxe room with buffe...

Five Travel Tips For Florence

Image
The Uffizi Gallery Tip The Uffizi Gallery contains some of the most important and greatest art collections in the world. It is also the world's oldest museum. Most tour guide books and online travel sites will urge you to ensure that a visit to the Uffiizi is included as part of any Florence vacation, no matter how short. What most of them fail to tell you, or at least stress with sufficient emphasis, is that without a pre-booked ticket, you may not be able to visit the Uffizi at all! My wife and I had a three day holiday in Florence at the beginning of April 2005. We had planned on visiting the Uffizi Gallery and as soon as we checked in at our hotel we telephoned the gallery to purchase tickets. After several attempts without our calls being answered, we asked the hotel reception to do the booking for us. They explained that it was nearly always difficult to get through on the booking line and that our three day stay might not provide sufficient notice to make a booking possible....

Sandboarding in Dubai

Image
Sandboarding or Sand Surfing as it is often called is very similar to snowboarding, the main difference being that it takes place on sand dunes rather than snow slopes. The sport involves sliding down sand dunes with your feet strapped to a board. More experienced people don't strap themselves to the board but this is considered to be dangerous, especially for novice boarders. Speeds of up to 60mph have been recorded by sandboarders in Dubai. Just like snowboarding it is best to start with the smaller dunes and progress to the much steeper ones. Conventional snowboards can be used for sandboarding but it is best to use a board made from harder materials like formica, laminex and fibre glass composite. To ensure a smooth ride over the sand you will need to wax your board with a paraffin based wax. Dubai is a very popular location for Sandboarding as it has vast areas of desert with plenty of sand dunes. Because conditions are excellent throughout the year you can sandboard in Dubai...

They go into the identity of a city that makes it unique, and that uniqueness is not found just in those places that make it famous but on the streets and venues where the locals inhabit. London: A great walking city, much of London can be seen by keeping in close proximity to the Thames. Because the city street patterns have not changed much in centuries, there is quite a haphazard way they are laid out. But that is part of the charm in walking this city, and the exte...
